Why?
This is now undisputed fact that farming is no more profitable profession. There are multiple reasons behind the doom of the most essential profession. One of the biggest driver in farming is raw material required for farming. This includes seeds, fertilizers, pesticide, water etc. After green revolution in India, traditional farming practice radically changed in India. Farmers gradually became dependent of raw material supply from big international corporations. This precarious situation meant higher and higher prices of these raw materials to farmers. Many government policies tried to ease the situation mainly by providing credit to the farmers. But this did not worked out, clearly. There are only two effective solutions to plight of agriculture in India, either increase the price of agricultural produce or decrease the price of input raw materials. Increasing price of farm product is not feasible in developing / poor country like India. So only solution to the problem is reducing cost of raw material like fertilizers, seeds etc. As discussed already Indian farmers are dependent on seeds and fertilizers from multinational corporations. In order to reduce this dependence farmers need to go back tradition sourcing of raw materials, in other words farmers need to buy fertilizers and seeds from each other. But this had a logistic limitation, but not any more. Our smartphone's can be used as a platform for exchange of homemade (or as we call it "Gawathi" or ""Desi") seeds, fertilizers and everything else farmer will need for farming.
This serves many strategic advantages to farmers and the country. Farmers will now pay their fellow farmer instead of paying to multi-national corporations. This opens up many new avenues for them to generate income. We will encourage more and farmers to produce more and more traditional compost fertilizers and we will give platform for them to sell that. Those farmers who have organic (non hybrid) seeds will be able to reach lot more farmers, not just their friends and relatives. Apart from this main purpose, our platform will serve other needs of farmers like availability of farm labors, sell of their perishable produce like milk and eggs, access to critical farm services like tractors and bullocks.
On other hand country will also benefit from reduced spending on subsidies given for fertilizers and seeds. in 2015-16 Govt of Indian spent 70,000 Cr Rupees on these subsidies. Modern research also points out that organic farming is more sustainable in long term and in fact gives more yield in long term. This platform is going to be help in conserving environment and public health.
How?
Our internet based website and android/window app will be used to give farmers access to other farmers, may be living in nearby village or in the same village. This service will be provided in Marathi and English language initially (also planned to expand to other regional languages in near future). Farmers who want to buy or sell their farm related inventory or services need to post the information about inventory, location and preferred contact method.
If you do not have smart phone or access to internet, you still will be able to use this service. We will launch telephone service, where you will be able to call and ask our operators to post about your inventory and contact information. Also we will appoint service agents in select villages, whom you can approach and they will post your inventory.
When?
We are aiming to launch this service through website and android app starting April 10th 2017. There will be successive upgrades to include more features and languages in later 6 months.
